Raygill Riding Centre is situated just 3 miles from Barnard Castle, or "Barney" as it is locally known. "Barney", is the historic gateway to Teesdale, full of fascinating old shops and an abundant centre for antique collectors. Still a thriving market town, the gorgeous Georgian buildings give a very distinctive feel to Barnard Castle. From the old Butter Market to the narrow alleyways and quaint tea shops, "Barney" presents a charming character to any visitor. The town has over 20 pubs, clubs, shops and restaurants. The crown jewel of the town is the magnificent The Bowes Museum with internationally famous collections, including works by Goya, El Greco and Canaletto. Barnard CastleThe town has many historic connections, including associations with Charles Dickens, Oliver Cromwell, Sir Walter Scott, Turner and John Wesley. In earlier times, "Barney" evolved as a town in the shadow of Bernard Balliol's castle. Built on a superior defensive site in 1125, the castle is in the care of English Heritage and is open to the public. The ruins of the castle will keep you occupied for many hours with such great adventures as exploring the dungeons, the castle keep and the ancient history.

Both Eggleston Hall and ancient Raby Castle are nearby and boast beautiful gardens and an enchanting setting to an afternoon picnic.

Also worth a trip is High Force, the highest free fall waterfall in England. Be sure to remember your camera!

If you would like to indulge in some retail therapy, a visit to high street stores is within easy reach. The bigger centres of Darlington (20 minutes), Durham (35 minutes), Newcastle/Gateshead and the Metro Centre (60 minutes) and York (65 minutes) are accessible via car.
